Hi all,
Sorry I've missed a couple of months
newsletters but we've been so busy there just hasn't been enough hours
in the day. Anyway we're back and I must say I thought we would never
get this months offering finished, but here it is, better late than
never.
To kick off I thought you may be
interested in a couple of "Concept" cars below.

Calling all Travellers
Now
that the upgraded NatureBase website has been up and running for a few
months, we thought we'd let you know about some of the features for
travellers in our great State.
There is a
Travellers' Forum where you can tell others about your favourite
places to visit or your vacation in Western Australia, or you can share
travel tips, road conditions and best places to stop for a bite to eat
in "The Roadhouse".
To post a message, you need to 'log in'
using the box on the right of the forum. If you are not yet registered,
you can
register here.
Kalbarri
National Park
Due to works
associated with construction of a shade shelter and toilet block at
Natural Bridge in Kalbarri National Park, the coastal walk trail between
Natural Bridge and Island Rock will be closed intermittently over the
next 10 weeks
Porongurup
National Park re-opened
Areas of Porongurup National Park, which
have been closed since wildfire in February 2007, are again open for
public visitation. This follows the completion of works to re-establish
and reinstate walk trails to a safe standard for public access.
Considerable amounts of timber which had fallen across trails were also
removed.
Closure
of Wellington Dam quarry area
From April 2008 the area surrounding the
quarry will be closed to the public. Parking will be available near the
kiosk and pedestrian access for the public to view the dam wall works,
via paths from the kiosk to the lookout, will remain open. These works
are expected to extend to 2010.
Cheers,
Ray

I
guess the big news this month is that our long time "tail end Charlie"
Peter Deas has joined us as a full time trainer. Pete has been with us
part time for over 4 years now, and it's great to have him on board full
time. Welcome to the team Pete.
We have also taken on an extra pair of hands in
the office to give Denise and Rina some help so a big warm welcome to
Christine Gilmore. Christine joins us from Diabetes WA, where she
had worked for over 4 years. With both
her and her husband being keen 4Wdrivers, Christine will be taking on a
lot of the day to day administration for our recreational training and
Campfire Escapes her email address is
chris@eureka4wd.com.au . As part of Chris's induction, she
will be joining one of our trainers for the day to undertake one of our
4WD courses first hand. Welcome aboard Chris, we hope you enjoy
the ride!
Not
too much other news at Eureka this month but as always we are flat out
busy. We've picked up some more new contracts and Richard is
seeing a lot of the inside of aeroplanes. Trips to site have taken him
to Karratha, Tom Price, Pannawonica, Paraburdoo, Newman and Yandi this
month and next month is shaping up the same. I hope he likes airline
food.
We do have a new brochure (pictured above right)
which you will find in 4WD & Camping stores around Perth

News & Stuff |
We (Nick & Ray) have been having a ball over
the last month. A great group of people came away with us on our
Blackwood Beauty trip at the beginning of Feb, followed up by 4
sensational days away on the Warren to Windy trip over the long weekend.
A few of the pictures from the Blackwood:
It's amazing what we come across on our
travels. While having lunch at Lake Yeagarup, a bloke walk in and asked
if we could give him a bit of a hand as his car was stuck. Being the
obliging sorts of chaps we are, we said ok. When we got to the car
(Nissan) we found it almost on its side down a steep embankment. What
had happened was, he pulled over on a single lane track to let an
oncoming vehicle pass and the ground gave way. A very difficult recovery
took us about 1 ½
hours with winch, snatch blocks, chains, Hi-Lift Jack and recovery
straps, oh and not to forget a lot of digging and chopping of wood to
build up the track. It all turned out well but did make us late
into camp that night.
Our
clients are enjoying our new technology with the video camera. We now
not only take still pictures but video as well. The whole lot are then
edited down into a full DVD movie and sent to participants a few weeks
after the trip (no charge). A lovely way to help remember a trip and
share your experiences with friends. The movie will play on the telly or
PC.
Also since starting this
edition of the newsletter we've had a great 4 day trip up The Holland
Track with 14 vehicles. Nick was unable to make the trip due to a minor
ailment. The trip was lead by Mr E and myself and it's fair to say we
had a ball. Duncan Wilson stepped in as chief photographer and did a
wonderful job. Thanks Dunc's

Gungho to
Disaster.
4W
Drivers coming to grief is becoming a popular form of entertainment on
the net these days. In fact there’s bound to be one somewhere in this
month’s newsletter. Some look like calculated risk taking (70 Series
crossing flooded river with young child in passenger seat)
to view, while others are obviously inexperienced drivers with no idea
of their own or the vehicle’s limitations (Pajero roll over)
a short movie of what I'm talking about.
Driver’s lack of ability
is the prime cause of most 4WD disasters – inability to read the terrain
and respond correctly to hazards. But by far the biggest contributor is
the gungho attitude of people who think they and their 4WDs are
invincible. Helped along by manufacturers who promote their vehicles as
all conquering chariots appealing to the gladiator in each of us.
Unfortunately when the
gungho get behind the wheel, there’s often wives and children in the
passenger seats who have no choice
but to cop it sweet.
Ah well, most of you
reading this will have done a Eureka training course and have a better
attitude to 4W driving. So for the
really gungho I say, pull your head in – assess the risk and protect
your passengers, your pride and your pocket.
Hey, let's not forget
that the latest edition (66) of the magazine is out, so grab a copy for
a good read eh! and edition 67 is just around the corner in a few weeks.
Cheers,
Nick (jumps off soap box).

for The Doggy Thought for the Day

Pete reckons he'd like to live his next life backwards:
My
next life:
I want to live my next life backwards:
You start out dead and get that out of the way.
Then you wake up in a nursing home feeling better every day.
Then you get kicked out for being too healthy.
Enjoy your retirement and collect your pension.
Then when you start work, you get a gold watch on your first
day.
You work 40 years until you're too young to work.
You get ready for High School: drink alcohol, party, and you're
generally promiscuous.
Then you go to primary school, you become a kid, you play, and
you have no responsibilities.
Then you become a baby, and then...
You spend your last 9 months floating peacefully in luxury, in
spa-like conditions -
Central heating, room service on tap, and then...
You finish off as an orgasm

Engineering Question of the Day from Gavin (Grunt):
How much does a house weigh?
Answer:
Just a tad more than a rural two-lane bridge can hold, apparently.
But look at the view they now have! Water front.
