Ultimate 4WD & Defensive Driving Program

The Ultimate 4WD & Defensive Driving Program encompasses a broad range of skills and knowledge essential for the safe, competent, and effective operation of light vehicles both on-road and off-road. This comprehensive two-day course is designed to build driver confidence, technical capability, and sound decision-making in a variety of operational environments.

Participants will develop practical skills to safely operate a 4WD vehicle across diverse terrain, including gravel and unsealed roads, rutted and uneven tracks, steep and rugged inclines, and soft sand conditions. Emphasis is placed on terrain assessment, vehicle control, speed management, and correct use of 4WD systems to maintain traction and stability.

The course also focuses on communication and convoy management strategies, including correct use of UHF radios, hand signals, and safe spacing to ensure effective coordination when travelling in groups or remote locations. Participants will learn safe vehicle recovery methods, including the correct selection and use of snatch straps, recovery boards, and self-recovery techniques, with a strong emphasis on risk assessment, recovery setup, and safe execution.

Practical defensive driving techniques are undertaken in real-world off-road environments, allowing participants to apply hazard awareness, fatigue management, emergency braking, wildlife hazard management, and safe decision-making under varying conditions. This ensures drivers are prepared to respond appropriately to unexpected hazards both on sealed and unsealed roads.

Throughout the course, participants will also learn how to conduct vehicle pre-start safety checks and inspections, including tyres, recovery equipment, fluid levels, and vehicle condition, to reduce the risk of mechanical issues and incidents when operating in remote or high-risk environments.

This program is ideally suited to those seeking a comprehensive, safety-driven 4WD and defensive driving course, covering all critical aspects required to operate confidently and responsibly in real-world conditions.

Grp4 - Occupational 4WD course

This two-day Ultimate 4WD Training course is our most comprehensive off-road driver training program, designed to develop confident, capable, and safety-focused 4WD operators across a wide range of environments and conditions.

Participants will learn how to safely operate a 4WD vehicle over gravel roads, rutted and uneven terrain, steep rugged hills, and soft sand, with a strong emphasis on vehicle control, terrain assessment, and risk management.

Extensive coverage is given to sand driving techniques, including tyre pressure selection and management, momentum control, dune driving principles, and route selection. Participants will also develop practical vehicle recovery skills, including safe use of snatch straps, recovery boards, and self-recovery techniques, with a clear focus on correct setup, communication, recovery forces, and safe execution.

Defensive driving principles are reinforced throughout the course, covering hazard awareness, fatigue management, speed selection, wildlife hazards, emergency braking techniques, and safe driving practices on both sealed and unsealed roads. Participants will also gain a strong understanding of 4WD vehicle features and systems, including driveline configurations, traction control, differential locks, and how to correctly select and use these features in varying conditions.

Environmental responsibility and safe operating practices are embedded across all training activities, ensuring drivers understand how to minimise vehicle damage, reduce environmental impact, and operate safely in remote and high-risk environments.

This course is ideally suited to those seeking the highest level of 4WD training, covering all key safety, driving, and recovery skills required to confidently and responsibly operate a 4WD vehicle in real-world conditions.
